The extraordinary health benefits of British blackcurrants
Blackcurrants have 3-4x more vitamin C than oranges. They are also linked to better focus, reduced inflammation and improved eye health.
Blackcurrants are one of the most nutritionally dense fruits available in the UK, and one of the most overlooked. While everyone reaches for oranges when they feel a cold coming, a small handful of blackcurrants would serve them far better.
The vitamin C numbers
100g of blackcurrants contains around 180mg of vitamin C. The same weight of oranges contains around 53mg. Blackcurrants have approximately 3-4 times more vitamin C than oranges, making them one of the richest natural sources of the vitamin available in the UK. The recommended daily intake for adults is 40mg - a small handful gives you more than twice your daily dose.
The anthocyanin advantage
Blackcurrants get their deep purple colour from anthocyanins - powerful antioxidant compounds linked in research to improved focus, faster reaction times and reduced mental fatigue. Other research has linked regular blackcurrant consumption to reduced eye strain.
When to find them
British blackcurrants are in season from late June through August, peaking in July. The season is short - buy fresh and freeze immediately. Frozen blackcurrants are available year-round and are nutritionally equivalent to fresh. Perfect for smoothies, porridge and homemade cordial.
